Gatwick airport has recently focused on being an important airport for European destinations in particular. Almost all European airlines together with many others from elsewhere in the world, use Gatwick for some of their aircraft.
A huge investment of one billion pound has been announced in order to expand Gatwick. The aim of this project is to provide an improved experience for the visitor in all aspects. People responsible for running Gatwick airport believe that this investment will enable them to surpass Heathrow airport, since Gatwick has been constantly under its shadow.
In the past, Gatwick was somehow considered not as important as an airport compared to Heathrow. But Gatwick airport has a history that should be mentioned:
First of all, Gatwick was a private club and not always a public airport for major travel. Especially during the 20’s and 30’s it was a private flying club.
Moreover, in the past Gatwick airport was a racecourse. The later Gatwick Airport Station was, in the past, Gatwick Racecourse Station.
Another interesting fact is that during the Second World War Gatwick was a military airport. During these times it offered important services to various key operations.
The architectural style should also be mentioned as in 1936, Gatwick presented the world's first circular airport terminal. This way it could combine every necessary stage of air travel. A rail link led to the terminal and passengers could board directly to the aircraft for the first time.
In addition to the above, the Queen of England has visited the airport twice, for the major redevelopment opening ceremonies and for the opening of the new North Terminal.
