The island of
Lanzarote is best known as a beach holiday destination. Thanks to a great year round climate and the fact that there are over ninety great stretches of sand for visitors to enjoy.
But Lanzarote has much more to offer than just sunshine and sun loungers alone. As despite measuring just 58km by 38km the island boasts a whole host of impressive visitor attractions. Many of which have been developed under the aegis of a highly creative local artist called César Manrique.
The Timanfaya National Park
Lanzarote´s undisputed star attraction is the Timanfaya National Park. Scene of a series of huge volcanic eruptions that lasted for six years during the 1730´s.
Leaving around one third of the island looking very much like the surface of the moon.
Today the 300 plus volcanoes are now all thankfully dormant. But visitors can still enjoy watching their lunch cooked by the heat emanating from the ground below on giant grills .
The Timanfaya National Park is open daily from 10.00 to 18.00 and admission costs €8 for adults and €4 for children.
The Jameos Del Agua
Cesar Manrique´s first major work on Lanzarote was to convert this huge collapsed lava tube, part of the Atlántida Tunnel, into a subterranean grotto. Replete with sea-water fed lagoon, tropical planting and a concert auditorium.
He was seeking to show his fellow islanders that it was possible to work in harmony with Lanzarote´s volcanic terrain in order to create ecologically friendly attractions for visitors. As an alternative to golf courses and water parks.
Open daily, 10.00 -19.00, admission €8 for adults and €4 for children.
Jardin de Cactus
Another magnificent Manrique creation, the Jardin de Cactus is a celebration of the plant world’s spiniest and spikiest species. Located in the village of Guatiza – once the heart of Lanzarote´s cochineal industry. Which amongst other things kept the British army supplied with dye for their soldiers red coats
during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Open daily, 10.00-19.00, admission €5 adults and €2 for children.
Mirador Del Rio
The Mirador del Rio started life as a naval gun battery. Sited overlooking the Rio straits beween Lanzarote and the neighbouring island of La Graciosa during the disastrous Spanish war with the US during the 1890´s.
Today it has been transformed intro a breathtaking lookout point, granting visitors great views from some
450metres up the Risco de Famara cliff face.
César Manrique Foundation
Manrique created his own incredible home and studio over five bubbles in the lava flow. Creating the most unusual
property in Lanzarote in the process as well as a lasting legacy for his philosophy of fusing art with nature.
Today the site is a house museum and art gallery – and its design never fails to blow visitors away.
Open daily, 10.00-19.00, admission €8 adults, children under 12 years free.
